Mamas of Amupakin

Since 1990 the midwives, ‘Mamas’ of Amupakin have been delivering the next generation of natives from neighboring communities, through the use of traditional birthing methods and Amazonian plant medicines. Initially supported by the Spanish Red Cross, their funding was stopped when the Ecuadorean state offered conventional healthcare for free in 1996. Since then, this association has barely survived through donations and the sales of artisan products, handmade by the ‘Mamas’ themselves.

There is little to no trust in conventional hospitals and/or pharmaceuticals within these communities. Mothers would rather give birth in unsanitary conditions than opt for government run maternity units. As well as keeping their traditions alive, Amupakin is a lifeline to its peoples. The Ayni Way pledges to donate 50% of profit, and 100% (minus transaction fees) of additional donations from our supporters, to help Amupakin maintain their hospital and give their services for free, which include:

1. Financial support for up to 40 midwives
2. Construction of a hut for the school of ancestral knowledge
3. Construction of a public bath
4. Maintenance of a multi-purpose room (furniture and infrastructure)
5. Hospital sanitary equipment
6. Cabinets and bedding for the hospital
7. Stretchers and wheelchairs
8. Construction of a warehouse
9. Kitchen
